Used V-Blenders & Twin Shell Blenders
A V-blender is a tumble blender built from two cylindrical shells joined in a V. The vessel rotates end over end on a horizontal shaft. Powder splits into the two legs at the top of each turn and recombines at the bottom. There are no internal agitators, so the blend happens through gravity, and shear stays low. That suits friable granules, coated particles, and any product that breaks down under a ribbon or paddle. The same machine is sold under several names, including V-blender, vee blender, V-shell blender, and twin shell blender.
Federal Equipment Company stocks more than 50 used V-blenders as part of our used mixers and blenders inventory. Capacities range from 0.5 quart lab units to 300 cu ft production vessels in 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, and carbon steel. Drives range from 0.1 to 25 HP. The two shells of a V-blender meet at an angle and mount on a horizontal shaft. As the vessel turns, the batch divides into the two legs, then folds back on itself as the V inverts. Nothing sweeps the vessel wall. That is why a V-shape blender puts less mechanical stress on the product than a ribbon or paddle design, and why it is the common choice where particle integrity matters more than blend speed. Buyers comparing tumble blenders usually weigh a V-blender against a double cone or a bin blender on the same three points: batch size, ceiling height, and how the unit is charged and discharged.
Most production V-blenders carry a bar assembly, and it is often the detail that decides fit. A pin bar mounts inside the V on its own high-speed shaft and breaks agglomerates while the shell rotates. A liquid bar does the same work and also introduces a binder or liquid additive into the moving powder, which matters for wet granulation and for coating applications. Both types are common in our inventory, alongside units with no bar at all. Some blenders also offer variable-speed drives, jacketed shells, and vacuum-rated vessels.
Charging and discharge shape most of the remaining layout decisions. Larger units sit on stands with leg extensions that set the discharge height, and many production blenders arrive with a drum lift or blender charger for loading. Discharge is typically through a valve at the point of the V. Every vessel carries a maximum material density rating, and units in our inventory are rated from 45 to 500 lbs per cu ft, so density is worth checking against your own product early.
Patterson-Kelley is the name most associated with this design, and P-K units account for the majority of the twin shell blenders we carry. They are listed as P-K or PK blenders and appear across the Blendmaster bench series, the Cross-Flow line, and the MVP blender systems. GlobePharma MaxiBlend and MiniBlend units cover lab and pilot work. We also see Gemco, Bectochem, Ross, and A&M Process. Federal Equipment Company inspects equipment at intake and records shell condition, bearing and seal wear, drive function, and bar operation. Refurbishment and testing can be arranged before shipment.

Sizing and scale-up
Lab and bench units start at 0.5 quart and run through the 2, 8, and 16 quart sizes. Several bench blenders ship with more than one shell, so a single drive covers two or three batch sizes for formulation work. Production capacities step up through 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 20 cu ft, then on to 50, 125, 150, and 300 cu ft. Drive power tracks capacity and density together, so a heavy product in a mid-size shell can call for the same motor as a light product in a larger one.

Individual units sell, but the same series come back through our inventory. On the Patterson-Kelley side that is the Blendmaster bench blenders, the Cross-Flow line, and the MVP blender systems. GlobePharma runs the MaxiBlend and MiniBlend series. We also see Bectochem GMP, Ross VCB, and A&M Process ATS units.
Why Buy Used
Used V-blenders typically sell for a fraction of comparable new equipment. The gap is widest on large production vessels, where new fabrication carries the longest lead times and the highest material cost.
Lead time is often what settles the decision. A new V-blender of production size is a build-to-order item, with lead times measured in months. A used unit already on the floor can ship in days or weeks once inspection is complete.
This design holds up well in the used market because there is very little to wear out. The vessel has no internal agitator, so the wear points are limited to the drive assembly, the bearings and shaft seals, and the bar assembly where one is fitted. Inspection reports covering those points are available, and refurbishment and testing can be arranged upon request. Validation remains the buyer's responsibility.
