Used Ribbon Blenders & Paddle Mixers
Ribbon blenders and paddle mixers blend dry powders, granules, and light pastes in a horizontal trough. A ribbon agitator uses inner and outer helical bands that move material in opposite directions at once. Paddle mixers use angled blades instead. Paddles are gentler on friable material and handle heavier bulk densities. Both designs run batch sizes from a few cubic feet to several hundred.
Federal Equipment Company stocks more than 25 used ribbon blenders and paddle mixers as part of our used mixers and blenders inventory. Working capacities range from 1.3 to 385 cu ft in 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, and carbon steel. Drives range from 1.5 to 40 HP. Single-shaft and dual-shaft paddle designs are both in stock. Manufacturers include Marion Process Solutions, American Process, AIM, Weiler, Scott Equipment, Areco, and Ross. Most units are held at our Cleveland, OH facility and are available for inspection.

A ribbon blender consists of a U-shaped horizontal trough and a shaft carrying two helical ribbons. The outer ribbon moves material toward the center of the trough and the inner ribbon moves it back toward the ends. This counter-flow action gives a uniform blend in roughly 10 to 15 minutes for most dry mixes. Ribbon designs suit free-flowing powders, granules, and dry blends where a consistent ratio matters more than gentle handling.
A paddle mixer replaces the ribbons with rows of angled paddles fixed to the shaft. Paddles lift and fold material rather than dragging it along the trough wall. That reduces attrition of friable granules, coated particles, and heat-sensitive products, and it copes better with sticky or high-bulk-density material. Dual-shaft paddle designs, common in food and protein processing, use two counter-rotating shafts to create a fluidized blending zone that further shortens cycle times.
Both designs share the same core components: a jacketed or unjacketed trough, a shaft and drive assembly, end seals, and a discharge valve. Discharge configuration is usually the detail that determines fit. Center-bottom slide gates, flush-mounted plug valves, and full-length drop-bottom troughs each suit different downstream handling requirements. Several units in our inventory also feature high-speed choppers or intensifier bars to break down agglomerates during blending.
Federal Equipment Company inspects equipment at intake and records motor condition, shaft and ribbon wear, seal condition, and drive function. Refurbishment and testing can be arranged before shipment for added assurance. Equipment is available for inspection at our facility.
Applications & Industries
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing: dry blending of excipients and active ingredients ahead of granulation, tableting, or encapsulation in solid dosage production
- Food and beverage production: seasoning and spice blends, dry beverage mixes, and protein and bakery premixes
- Chemical processing: dry chemical blends, catalyst preparation, and pigment and additive dispersion
- Nutraceutical and supplement production: vitamin premixes, powdered supplement blends, sports nutrition formulations
- Plastics compounding: dry blending of resins, fillers, colorants, and stabilizers before extrusion
- Agricultural and pet food: feed premixes, mineral blends, and coated or extruded product where paddle designs limit particle damage
- Laboratory and pilot work: bench-scale ribbon blenders from around 1 cu ft for formulation trials and scale-up

Model series we see regularly
Individual units come and go, but the same series recur across our inventory. On the ribbon side, that is the AIM RB series above all, along with American Process PRB and DRB, Aaron Process IMB, and Scott Equipment GHRM. On the paddle side, Marion BPS and SPY, and APV HD.
Why Buy Used
Used ribbon blenders and paddle mixers typically sell for a fraction of comparable new equipment, with the savings widest on large-capacity carbon steel units, where new fabrication lead times are longest.
Lead time is often the deciding factor. A new blender of this type is usually a build-to-order item, with lead times measured in months. Equipment already on the floor can ship in days or weeks once inspection is complete.
Blenders of this design are mechanically straightforward, which is why they hold up well in the used market. The wear points are predictable: ribbon or paddle edges, end seals, and the drive assembly. Inspection reports covering those points are available, and refurbishment and testing can be arranged upon request.
