Used Plastic Granulators and Grinders

A plastic granulator cuts scrap plastic into uniform regrind that can go back into production. Knives on a spinning rotor shear parts, sprues, sheet, and film against fixed bed knives, and a screen under the rotor sets the size of the regrind. For pharmaceutical wet and dry granulation, see our high shear mixers and granulators and oscillating granulators instead.

Federal Equipment Company stocks used plastic granulators and grinders for plastics processing, from bench-top units under 1 HP to 300 HP machines. The selection covers heavy-duty granulators, sheet grinders, auger-fed units, and hog mills. Brands we see regularly include Cumberland, Conair, Nelmor, Rapid, Mitts & Merrill, Herbold, and Gloucester. Most units are held at our Cleveland, OH facility and are available for inspection.

The rotor decides what a granulator handles well. Open rotors leave space between the knife mounts, so air moves through the chamber and thin-walled or heat-sensitive parts stay cooler. Closed and solid rotors carry more mass and suit thick parts and heavy purgings. Staggered and scissor-cut rotors set the knives at an angle, so each one cuts progressively across the chamber, which lowers the peak load on the drive. Rotor knife counts in this category range from 2 to 20.

Feed and discharge decide how a granulator fits a line. Small auger-fed units sit beside a molding press and take sprues and runners as they drop. Sheet grinders use powered feed rolls to pull skeleton web or trim off a roll at a steady rate. Heavy-duty granulators take bulky parts through wide hoppers, often with a hydraulic or pneumatic tilt for access to the knives. On the discharge side, a blower and cyclone carry regrind to a bin, while simpler units drop into a catch box or a gaylord.

Model series recur in this category, and buyers tend to search by them. From Cumberland we see X1000 and X1400 heavy-duty granulators and Model 50 and Model 37 granulators. We also handle Mitts & Merrill 13 CSD hog mills, MPG F56HB sheet grinders, and Plastic Recycling Machinery MGK 400/175TL auger-fed granulators.

Applications & Industries

  • Injection molding: regrinding sprues, runners, and rejected parts so the regrind can be blended back with virgin resin at the press.
  • Blow molding: granulating flash, tails, and rejected bottles and containers for reuse on the same line.
  • Packaging and thermoforming: grinding the skeleton web left after trays, cups, and clamshells are cut from a roll. Roll-fed sheet grinders take the web straight off the trim press.
  • Sheet and film production: reclaiming edge trim and startup scrap with low-profile sheet granulators and feed-roll grinders.
  • In-plant scrap reclaim: reducing large purgings, lumps, and bulky rejected parts in heavy-duty granulators and hog mills before the material is reprocessed.

Why Buy Used

A used plastic granulator can ship in weeks, without the wait for a new machine to be built and configured. It typically costs a fraction of the new price, which matters when the purpose of the machine is to recover the value of scrap. For a molder adding a press, or a processor bringing a new scrap stream in house, that difference often decides whether the project goes ahead.

Granulators hold their value in service. The parts that wear are the rotor knives, the bed knives, the screens, and the bearings, and all of them can be resharpened or replaced. A heavy steel cutting chamber and rotor outlast many sets of knives. That is why the used market for this equipment is deep and why buying used is routine rather than a compromise.

Every machine is inspected when it arrives at our Cleveland, OH facility, and it is available for customer inspection before purchase. Refurbishment and run testing can be arranged upon request.
