Used Double & Twin Drum Dryers

Double and twin drum dryers apply steam-heated rotating drums to dry thin films of liquid or slurry feed. Material spreads across the drum surface, dries within a fraction of a revolution, and a knife scraper removes the dried product as flakes, powder, or sheets.

Federal Equipment Company stocks used double and twin drum dryers in drum diameters from 6" to 42" and roll face widths up to 120". Available configurations include atmospheric and vacuum designs in carbon steel, chrome-plated, and stainless steel construction, with variable speed motor drives ranging from 1 to 10 HP. These dryers are part of the broader used dryers inventory, which includes rotary, spray, flash, and other industrial drying equipment.

Double and twin drum dryers are continuous-contact dryers. Two counter-rotating drums are set at a controlled gap, and feed material is applied to the drum surface or into the nip between the drums. Steam or hot water circulates through the hollow drum interior. As the drum rotates, the thin film dries by direct conduction. A knife discharge scrapes the dried product into a trough or conveyor below.

Twin drum dryers use two independently driven drums that feed from the nip between them. Double drum dryers typically apply feed to the top of each drum via applicator rolls or dip pans. Both designs allow precise control of drum speed, gap, and steam pressure to tune residence time and drying intensity for the product.

Key components include cored drums with rotary unions for steam and condensate flow, fixed or adjustable knife discharge systems, hydraulic or screw drum gap adjustment, end guides, and variable speed drives. Drum surfaces are typically chrome-plated carbon steel or stainless steel to resist corrosion and facilitate clean product release. Vacuum drum dryers enclose the drums in a sealed chamber for processing heat-sensitive or solvent-laden materials at reduced temperatures.

Federal Equipment Company carries used double and twin drum dryers from Buflovak, Buffalo Technologies, and Overton. Units in stock have been rated to 160 psi at temperatures up to 650°F. Our team can arrange an inspection and assist with qualifying equipment for your process requirements.

Why Buy Used

New drum dryers from major manufacturers typically carry long lead times and high capital costs. Used equipment can reduce capital expenditure significantly and is available for immediate inspection and delivery. This is practical for process development, capacity expansion, or replacement of a failed unit on a tight timeline.

Federal Equipment Company inspects equipment at our Cleveland, OH facility before sale. We can arrange third-party inspection and roll surface certification on request. Our team can also assist with evaluating drum condition, roll surface quality, and drivetrain components to support your purchasing decision.
