Used Oven Dryers

Oven dryers use circulated hot air, steam, or radiant heat to remove moisture or solvents from materials in a batch or continuous process. They are a common drying solution across pharmaceutical, chemical, and food processing operations, valued for their flexibility in temperature control, loading configurations, and containment design.

Federal Equipment Company stocks a wide range of used oven dryers from our Dryers inventory, including bench-top lab ovens, convection and vacuum units, large truck and cart ovens, tray drying ovens, and pharmaceutical depyrogenation ovens. Manufacturers represented include Gruenberg, Despatch, Blue M, Binder, O’Hara, Sahara, Memmert, and others. Capacities range from under 1 cubic foot for benchtop vacuum units to over 280 cubic feet for truck-style batch ovens.

Oven dryers operate by generating a controlled thermal environment inside an insulated chamber. A heating element (electric, steam coil, or gas burner) raises the internal temperature, and a circulation blower distributes heat across the load. Some designs draw moisture away through exhaust venting. Vacuum ovens pull moisture out at sub-atmospheric pressure, enabling lower-temperature drying of heat-sensitive materials.

The range of available configurations reflects the diversity of applications this equipment serves. Benchtop units from manufacturers like Binder and Blue M handle small-batch laboratory and analytical work. Mid-scale convection and gravity ovens from Despatch, Grieve, Gruenberg, and VWR cover pilot-scale and production support roles. Large truck and cart ovens, particularly Gruenberg’s stainless steel steam and electric models, are used in pharmaceutical batch processing where GMP construction and validated temperature uniformity are required. Tray drying ovens from O’Hara are purpose-built for pharmaceutical solid dosage drying, with capacities of 100 kg to 400 kg and XP or ATEX options for solvent-handling environments. Drum ovens from Sahara and Benko handle viscous materials in 55-gallon or 275-gallon containers.

Depyrogenation ovens represent a specialized subset. These units, including models from Gruenberg, Despatch, Fedegari, and Lytzen, operate at temperatures up to 280°C to destroy bacterial endotoxins. They typically feature pass-through designs, HEPA-filtered airflow, stainless steel product-contact surfaces, and 21 CFR Part 11-compatible controls. These are critical assets in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing and glassware preparation.

Applications and Industries

Specifications and Configurations

Temperature range: Approximately 40°C for ambient-control lab units up to 650°F (343°C) for high-temperature industrial models. Depyrogenation ovens reach 280°C.

Capacity: Under 1 cubic foot (benchtop vacuum ovens) up to 283 cubic feet (large truck ovens). Tray drying ovens are rated by material load from 100 kg to 400 kg.

Heating sources: Electric resistance, steam coil, natural gas

Voltage: 115-120V (benchtop) to 460-480V (industrial)

Materials of construction: Stainless steel product-contact surfaces throughout most pharmaceutical-grade units. Carbon steel exterior on some drum heating equipment.

Design variants:

  • Convection (forced air circulation)
  • Gravity convection (natural airflow, no blower)
  • Vacuum (sub-atmospheric pressure drying)
  • Truck/cart (large-format, wheeled load design)
  • Tray drying (stacked tray racks on wheeled carts)
  • Pass-through (dual-door, cleanroom-compatible)
  • Drum ovens (drum or tote heating for bulk materials)
  • Depyrogenation (high-temperature, HEPA-filtered, pharma-grade)

Special design options: Explosion-proof (XP/ATEX), solvent-rated, 21 CFR Part 11 controls, GMP construction, HMI and chart recorder options

Why Buy Used Oven Dryers

New industrial ovens often carry 20 to 40 week lead times, particularly for custom or pharmaceutical-grade configurations. Used equipment is available immediately, which matters when a production line is down or a validation timeline is under pressure.

Used oven dryers from Federal Equipment Company typically cost a fraction of new replacement cost. A new pharmaceutical truck oven or O’Hara tray drying oven can represent a significant capital expenditure. Used units in good mechanical condition offer the same process capability at a substantially lower acquisition cost.

Federal Equipment Company inspects equipment at intake and can discuss refurbishment, testing, or calibration support as part of the sale. Buyers should assess their own validation requirements and determine whether a used asset meets their qualification needs before purchase.
