Used Powder Filling Equipment & Auger Fillers

Powder filling equipment doses dry product by volume or by weight. Containers range from vials and jars to bags, cans, and drums. Auger fillers are the most common design. A screw turns inside a funnel below the hopper. It meters a set number of revolutions and delivers a repeatable shot. Volumetric cup fillers meter a fixed cavity instead. Net-weight fillers weigh the container as it fills and stop the feed on target. Which design fits depends on how the powder flows, how fine it is, and how tight the fill tolerance has to be.

Federal Equipment Company stocks used powder fillers. They are part of our primary and secondary packaging equipment inventory. Auger, volumetric, net weight, bag, and drum filling designs are all represented. Mountings include bench top, pedestal, and portable cart. Fill sizes range from 50 mg on bench-top auger units up to 100 lb drum stations. Product contact parts are stainless steel. Manufacturers include All-Fill, AMS, Per-Fil, Cozzoli, Bausch+Ströbel, Taylor Products, and Spee-Dee. Most units are held at our Cleveland, OH facility and are available for inspection.

An auger filler turns a metering screw inside a funnel below the product hopper. Servo drives and encoder feedback set the number of revolutions. The fill then repeats within a narrow band once the machine is set up for the product. Auger geometry is matched to the powder. Open pitch suits free-flowing granules. Tighter pitch suits fine or aerating material. An agitator in the hopper keeps product moving down and prevents bridging. Change parts are usually a matched auger and funnel set. The range a machine covers depends on which sets come with it.

The other designs solve different problems. Volumetric cup fillers meter a fixed cavity and change over quickly on free-flowing product. Net-weight fillers place the container on a load cell and cut the feed at target weight. That suits high-value product and tight tolerances. Bag and drum filling stations pair a metering device with a scale, a support frame, and a dust seal. Automated dosing systems dispense small quantities into vials, capsules, tubes, and well plates for laboratory work.

Most machines share the same building blocks. There is a product hopper with an agitator, a metering device, a container-handling arrangement, and a control package. Allen-Bradley PLCs with touchscreen interfaces are common on later units. Older machines often run simpler relay or single-board controls. Fillers rarely stand alone on a line. Several units in our inventory arrive with a feed hopper, screw conveyor, weigh scale, discharge conveyor, labeler, or pack-off table attached.

Federal Equipment Company inspects equipment at intake. We record drive condition, product contact surfaces, control function, and the change parts included. Refurbishment and testing can be arranged before shipment. Equipment is available for inspection at our Cleveland, OH facility.

Applications & Industries

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing: filling active powders and blends into vials, bottles, and capsules, often under weight verification, across solid dosage and aseptic operations
  • Food and beverage production: spice and seasoning packs, drink mixes, bakery premixes, and protein and coffee packaging
  • Nutraceutical and supplement production: powdered supplement jars, single serve sachets, and sports nutrition containers
  • Packaging lines: powder dosing stations integrated with cappers, labelers, and checkweighers
  • Chemical processing: dry chemical, pigment, catalyst, and additive packaging into pails, bags, and drums
  • Plastics compounding: additive, colorant, and masterbatch dosing into bags and boxes
  • Laboratory and formulation work: automated dosing of small powder quantities into vials, tubes, well plates, and reactor blocks

Why Buy Used

Used powder filling equipment sells for a fraction of comparable new machinery. The gap is widest on bench-top and semi-automatic units. A new build of that size still carries a full engineering charge.

Lead time is often the deciding factor. A new filler is normally built to order and quoted in months. A machine already on the floor can ship in days or weeks once inspection is complete.

Auger and volumetric fillers are mechanically simple, which is why they hold up in the used market. The wear points are predictable: the auger and funnel set, the hopper agitator bearing, the drive, and the seals. Change parts are the item to check closely. The auger and funnel sizes supplied with a machine set the fill range it covers without new tooling. Inspection reports covering those points are available. Refurbishment and testing can be arranged upon request.
