Used Industrial Pulverizers
A pulverizer reduces solid material to a fine, uniform powder. Industrial pulverizers do this three ways. Impact mills throw material against pins, blades, or a screen. Attrition mills grind it between two disks. Jet mills use compressed air or steam instead of a rotor, so the product picks up almost no heat. Which design fits depends on the feed size, the target particle size, and how heat-sensitive the material is.
Federal Equipment Company stocks more than 25 used industrial pulverizers as part of our used mills inventory. The selection covers jet mills, pin mills, disintegrators, lump breakers, crushers, and cage mills. Main drives range from 0.5 to 300 HP. Most machines are stainless steel, with carbon steel and Hastelloy units on hand as well. Brands we see regularly include Sturtevant, Fluid Energy, Rietz, Alpine, Urschel, Franklin Miller, Jacobson, Atlantic Coast Crusher, and Glatt. Most units are held at our Cleveland, OH facility and are available for inspection.

Fine size reduction is where a pulverizer earns its place. Coarse crushers break lumps. A pulverizer takes that coarse feed down to a controlled powder, and the mechanism it uses decides both the particle size and how much heat reaches the product.
Mechanical pulverizers do the work with a rotor. Pin mills and disintegrators spin a studded or bladed rotor inside a housing, often against a retaining screen that sets the top particle size. Rotor diameters in this category range from 5 in. on laboratory and pilot units to 36 in. on production attrition mills. Cage mills and impact crushers use rows of rotating bars and handle abrasive minerals. Lump breakers and delumpers sit at the other end of the range: slow-turning, high-torque shafts that break agglomerates without milling the product, with feed openings from 12 in. x 12 in. up to 24 in. x 24 in.
Jet mills and fluid energy mills have no moving parts in the grinding chamber. Compressed air or steam accelerates the particles until they collide with each other, and an internal classifier returns oversize material for another pass. Because there is no rotor and the expanding gas cools the chamber, jet milling suits heat-sensitive actives and low-melting-point solids. Nominal jet mill sizes here range from 2 in. to 30 in.
Model families recur in this category, and buyers tend to search by them. We handle Sturtevant Micronizer jet mills in 2 in., 4 in., 20 in., 24 in., and 30 in. sizes, Fluid Energy Aljet and Jet-O-Mizer mills, Rietz Extructor RE and Prebreaker PB units alongside Bepex Rietz RP disintegrators, Munson CIM pin mills, Alpine AFG fluidized-bed opposed jet mills and UPZ pin mills, Urschel Comitrol processors, JetPharma MC and LU jet mills, Franklin Miller Delumpers, Gericke Nibblers, Kemutec Kek Kibblers, Glatt Quick Sieve mills, Stokes Tornado mills, and Strong Scott Pulvacron mills. Every machine is inspected on arrival. Refurbishment and run testing can be arranged before shipment.
Applications & Industries
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing: micronizing an active ingredient to a target particle size for dissolution or content uniformity. Jet mills are the usual choice because they add very little heat.
- Solid dosage production: sieve milling wet or dry granulation, and delumping bulk excipients ahead of blending and compression.
- Chemical processing: pigments, resins, catalysts, and dry chemical intermediates. Hastelloy and ceramic-lined chambers handle corrosive and abrasive duty.
- Food and beverage: spices, sugar, starches, and protein powders. Urschel Comitrol processors are widely used for this work.
- Plastics and polymers: grinding resin and regrind to powder, including cryogenic systems for elastomers and other materials that soften under mechanical heat.
- Laboratory and pilot work: bench-scale rotor mills, ring and puck mills, and small jet mills for method development before a process is scaled up.
- Minerals, glass, and hard bulk solids: abrasive feeds that would wear out a fine-grinding mill. Cage mills, imp mills, and vertical roller mills cover this work, and dedicated glass pulverizers and crushing lines come through as well.

Why Buy Used
A new industrial pulverizer is a build-to-order item, with lead times measured in months once the drive package, materials, and containment level are specified. A used machine of the same size and configuration typically costs a fraction of the new price, and it can ship in weeks rather than quarters.
Pulverizers hold their value in service. The wear parts are the pins, hammers, blades, liners, and screens, and all of them are replaceable. A stainless steel housing and a rotor shaft that have been run on a clean product have decades of life left. That is why the used market for this equipment is deep and why buying used is routine rather than a compromise.
Every machine is inspected when it arrives at our Cleveland, OH facility, and it is available for customer inspection before purchase. Refurbishment and run testing can be arranged upon request. Process validation for your own material and facility remains with the buyer.
