Used Cherry-Burrell & Waukesha Pumps and Tanks
Waukesha Cherry-Burrell builds sanitary process equipment: positive displacement and centrifugal pumps, valves, mixers, and Votator scraped-surface heat exchangers. In our inventory, the Waukesha name appears on pumps and the Cherry-Burrell name mostly on stainless steel tanks, kettles, and reactors.
Federal Equipment Company is an independent dealer in used Waukesha Cherry-Burrell equipment, and we stock more than 40 units here. Each is listed under the name on its nameplate, so Waukesha, Cherry-Burrell, and Votator all appear here.
The pumps are stainless steel, with ports from 0.75 to 4 inches and drives from 0.75 to 20 HP. Cherry-Burrell reactors are jacketed and built in 316 or 316L stainless steel, and its tanks and kettles range from small receivers to large storage tanks. Most units are held at our Cleveland, OH facility and available for inspection.

Equipment We Carry
Pumps make up most of what comes through under these names. They fall into two designs that suit different products, and a smaller group of vessels and Votator heat exchangers fills out the line.
Waukesha positive displacement pumps A positive displacement pump moves a fixed volume of product with each turn of the shaft. In a Waukesha pump, two rotors turn in opposite directions without touching and carry product around the casing from inlet to outlet. Waukesha's heritage design is the external circumferential piston pump, which our listings call a rotary lobe pump.
Because the product is carried and not sheared, these pumps handle creams, pastes, slurries, and product with solids in it. Flow ratings on record range from about 9 GPM on a 1.5-inch model 15 to 310 GPM on a 4-inch model 200. Bare pump heads and pumps without motors also come through, which suits a plant replacing a worn head on an existing base.
Centrifugal pumps A centrifugal pump spins product outward with an impeller and turns that speed into pressure, so delivered flow falls as head rises. That suits thin liquids such as water, beverages, dairy product, brine, and cleaning solutions. The C-Series and 200 Series models are the common ones here, with ports from 1.5 to 4 inches and drives from 1 to 30 HP. The largest on record, a 4-inch model 2105, was rated near 1,400 GPM at 133 ft of head.
Cherry-Burrell tanks, kettles, and reactors Cherry-Burrell stainless steel vessels are the second-largest group. Kettles, receivers, and mix tanks have ranged from 30 gallons to 20,000-gallon storage tanks, and the jacketed reactors listed here range from 20 to 15,000 liters. Some kettles are twin-motion designs that pair a wall-scraping anchor agitator with an inner turbine. Many receivers carry a pressure rating and a full-vacuum rating.
Votator heat exchangers and evaporators A Votator scraped-surface heat exchanger heats or cools product too thick for a plate or tube exchanger. Product passes through a jacketed tube while blades on a rotating shaft scrape it off the wall, which keeps heat moving and the product mixed. The Votator II units we have handled carry 6-inch rotors, 36 or 72 inches long, rated 600 psi internal at 400°F. Votator evaporators have ranged from 1 to 158 square feet.
Models & Series
Buyers search this line by model number, and the same numbers come back year after year. On the Waukesha side, the Universal pumps come in U1 and U2 forms, written on the nameplate as 030U1, 060U2, 130UI, or 180U2. A 030U2 is rated near 36 GPM at 100 psi at 600 RPM.
The 5050, 5060, and 5070 make up the 5000 series, which in our records usually arrives on a base with an explosion-proof motor and a gear reducer. Other recurring Waukesha models include the 25, 30, 55, 60, 125, and 200. The model 34 is the odd one out, taking product in through a feed hopper.
On the centrifugal side, the C216, C218, and 2065 come through most often. A C216 has been rated near 280 GPM at 169 ft of maximum head, and a 2065 near 200 GPM at 140 ft of head. The VAH, labeled Cherry-Burrell, pairs a 1.5-inch by 1.5-inch body with a 4-inch impeller.
Among the vessels, the Cherry-Burrell CV storage tank recurs at 5,000 and 20,000 gallons, with dished heads, side-entering agitators, and leg mounts. The Votator II exchangers on record are the 6X36 and 6X72.
Applications & Industries
- Food and beverage processing: dairy, sauces, fillings, and syrups. Lobe pumps move viscous and particulate product without shearing it, and Votator exchangers heat and cool product such as cheese, margarine, and pie fillings.
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing: product transfer and jacketed reactors in 316 and 316L stainless steel, on lines that are cleaned in place between batches.
- Liquid dosage production: syrups, suspensions, and solutions moving between compounding vessels and filling lines.
- Semi-solid dosage production: creams, gels, and ointments, where viscosity rules out a centrifugal pump and a lobe pump carries the product instead.
- Chemical processing: transfer of clean intermediates, jacketed reactors and receivers for batch work, and Votator exchangers for viscous product.
- Biotechnology: low-shear transfer of cell culture and broth, where a high-speed impeller would damage the product.
Why Buy Used
A new sanitary pump is configured to order. The pump size, rotors, seals, drive, and gear ratio are all specified before it is built. A used pump of the same model and port size can ship in weeks.
The parts that wear on these pumps are made to be replaced. Rotors, seals, and gaskets are consumables, while a stainless steel casing that has run clean product has years of service left. Stainless steel tanks and reactors age the same way, with the vessel outlasting its agitator drive and seals.
Every unit is inspected when it arrives at our Cleveland, OH facility, and it is available for customer inspection before purchase. Our shop can run a jacket test on jacketed vessels and a motor test on agitator drives. Other refurbishment and testing can be arranged upon request, and process validation for your own material and facility remains with the buyer.
