Used Industrial Mixers & Blenders
Industrial mixers and blenders bring dry powders, granules, slurries, and pastes to a uniform composition. Buyers use the two words for the same machine, and the catalog reflects that, so a ribbon blender and a ribbon mixer are the same design. What separates the types is how the material moves. Agitated designs drive it with a rotating element inside a fixed vessel. Tumble designs rotate the whole vessel and let gravity fold the batch. Viscosity, particle fragility, and batch size decide which one fits.
Federal Equipment Company stocks more than 400 used industrial mixers and blenders spanning every major design in the category. Capacities range from 1 pint laboratory units to 385 cu ft production vessels, with drives from 1/15 to 600 HP in 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, and carbon steel. Manufacturers include Patterson-Kelley, Ross, Littleford, L.B. Bohle, DAY, BECOMIX, Gemco, and Marion Process Solutions. Most units are held at our Cleveland, OH facility and are available for inspection.

Agitated mixers hold the vessel still and move the product with a rotating element. This is the larger half of the category and it covers most dry blending work. Horizontal trough machines such as ribbon blenders and paddle mixers sweep material along the trough wall and fold it back on itself. Plow mixers use plow-shaped tools running close to the wall at higher tip speeds. That throws material into the open space above the bed and shortens cycle times on cohesive powders. Nauta mixers take a different route. A screw orbits the wall of a cone while lifting product from the bottom. The action is gentle, which suits fragile granules and very large batches.
Tumble blenders have no internal agitator at all. The vessel itself rotates and the batch divides and recombines under gravity, which keeps shear low and leaves particle structure intact. V-blenders and twin shell blenders, double cone blenders, and bin blenders all work this way. They differ mainly in vessel geometry, ceiling height, and how the unit is charged and discharged. Bin blenders separate the vessel from the drive entirely. A bin can be filled at one station, blended, and moved to the next without transferring powder.
Thicker products call for a different class of machine. Planetary mixers orbit one or more blades around the bowl while each blade turns on its own axis. That reaches every part of a stiff batch, and it handles pastes, gels, and sealants. Double arm mixers use overlapping sigma blades in a saddle-shaped trough for doughs, putties, and rubber compounds. At the high-energy end sit high intensity mixers, muller intensive mixers, fluidized zone mixers, and internal rotor and continuous mixers, where shear is the point rather than something to avoid. Banbury-style internal mixers in this group are the standard machine for rubber and compounding work.
Across all of these, the details that usually decide fit are the same: working capacity, materials of construction, jacketing, discharge arrangement, and whether the vessel is rated for vacuum. Jacketed vessels appear throughout our inventory, and vacuum-rated units are common on the planetary and internal rotor side. Federal Equipment Company inspects equipment at intake and records motor condition, blade and vessel wear, seal condition, and drive function.

How the types scale
Laboratory and bench work starts at 1 pint and runs through the small gallon and liter sizes. Production equipment steps up through the mid-range cubic-foot vessels and on to the largest units we have carried. Those include a 385 cu ft horizontal paddle blender and a plow mixer of 530 cu ft total capacity, rated at 371 cu ft working volume. Drive power tracks capacity and product density together. A dense compound in a mid-size vessel can call for a larger motor than a light powder in a bigger one.
Model series we see regularly
Individual units sell, but the same series return through our inventory. Littleford FKM and FM plow mixers are the most frequent. Ross planetary mixers run across the LDM, DPM, HDM, and PVM series. We also see BECOMIX RW vacuum homogenizing mixers and Farrel Banbury F-series internal mixers, including the F80 and F270.
Why Buy Used
Used industrial mixers and blenders typically sell for a fraction of comparable new equipment. The gap is widest on large production vessels and on high-intensity machines, where new fabrication carries the longest lead times and the highest material cost.
Lead time is often what settles the decision. A new production mixer is a build-to-order item, with lead times measured in months. A used unit already on the floor can ship in days or weeks once inspection is complete.
Most designs in this category hold up well in the used market because the mechanics are straightforward and the wear points are predictable: blade, ribbon, or plow edges, shaft seals, bearings, and the drive assembly. Our parts division, PharmParts, carries mixer and blender parts from Collette, Patterson-Kelley, and Hobart, including intensifier bars, pin bars, impellers, and blender shells. Inspection reports covering those points are available, and refurbishment and testing can be arranged upon request. Validation remains the buyer's responsibility.
